FAQ

Why is MTR or Mountaintop Removal bad?

The old-fashioned method for mining coal is closely regulated by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, and dumping of mining debris into rivers and streams is prohibited under the Clean Water Act. But during the Bush administration a workaround was created by which mining companies could apply for strip mining permits (MTR is one type of strip mining) directly to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Strip mining is appealing to big coal companies because it removes one of their greatest expenses and liabilities – miners. In the past 3 decades there has been nearly 30% job losses in the industry, while production of coal has increased in the U.S. by 32%. Much of the coal extracted by MTR is shipped to China for steel production. In essence, companies like Massey Energy and Arch Coal are fueling China’s industrial revolution by providing them with cheap coal, with the environmental and human health impacts being born by the American public.

For this and many other reasons, Robert Kennedy Junior has called the era of MTR mining in Appalachia …” the worst environmental tragedy in American history.”

Why target Chase Manhattan Bank?

JP Morgan Chase is one of the few public financial institutions in the world that still funds the practice of Mountaintop Removal (MTR). If you have a Chase bank account you are in fact funding “...the “worst environmental tragedy in American history.”

For coal companies, MTR is a cheap alternative to traditional mining... actual miners are not needed. Instead, explosives are used to literally blow off the tops of the mountains (with the equivalent force of one Hiroshima bomb every other week). Toxic sludge is held in unreinforced ponds and to date nearly 1,500 miles of pristine rivers and streams have been permanently buried by the rubble.

In Appalachia MTR coal companies like Arch and Massey are responsible for massive unemployment, polluted water supplies and irreparable damage to the most biodiverse temperate forest on earth.

It’s time to end MTR. And there is one, and only one, way to do so... cut off the supply of dirty coal funding.
